3 Types of Cabinets You Can Buy

June 6, 2019 by Dan

In the world of cabinetry, you can be overwhelmed with the vast amount of options available. Thoughts will go through your head such as, “What is best for my house?”, “What can I afford?”, “Where do I go to purchase these cabinets?”, etc.  This is going to be a brief post to give you an overview of the 3 types of cabinets you will have to choose from in addition to stores and cabinet makers you can purchase from.

1.  Stock Cabinets

Stock cabinets are also production cabinets that are focused on producing a few of the most popular and classic styles that you will find.  The companies that produce stock cabinets are focused on producing higher qualities of good, solid cabinets with a durable finish.  You can also find a lot of particle board based cabinets within the type of cabinet.  These cabinets are ideal for starter houses, flips, and potential investment houses. They have a lower price point and less options to choose from.  Stock cabinets can be delivered the quickest that can range from a few days to 2 weeks.

2.  Semi Custom Cabinets

Semi-custom cabinets are a step up from stock cabinets.  Companies within this line of cabinetry will have many styles and colors to choose from along with many different cabinet options to fit most rooms.  You do elevate the price level with semi-custom compared to the stock cabinets, but in doing so, the quality is also heightened in many cases.  These companies typically invest in high end, expensive equipment for producing cabinets. Semi-custom cabinets can meet most needs, but if you still aren’t satisfied with your options, you can move into the next option, custom cabinets.  Semi-custom cabinets can be made available within 4-6 weeks but sometimes longer.

3.  Custom Cabinets

Custom cabinets can be created specifically to fit your space exactly.  The sky is the limit here.  They can meet and exceed any request or budget.  Your options within custom cabinets are typically very vast in regards to wood, size, and finish.  Just because you are getting a custom cabinet doesn’t mean that you are getting the best quality.  You need to research the reviews and view the work of companies you are considering for your custom cabinets.  Custom cabinets can come out beautifully, but they come with a price.  They are typically the highest cost of any cabinet type, and they can be the longest to receive out of production.  Some custom cabinets can take between 6-10 weeks to receive.

You now have a good idea on the 3 types of cabinets you will encounter once you are ready to start moving forward with your project.  The stock, semi-custom, and custom cabinets all have something to offer you depending on your project and budget.  You can purchase these stock and semi-custom cabinets at big box stores such as Lowe’s or Home Depot or local cabinet dealers such as Grand Canyon Home Supply (www.grandcanyonhomesupply.com).  These cabinet dealers can also provide custom cabinets.  Local areas also have their own custom cabinet companies so be sure to research them online in places such as Google, Houzz, or other social media outlets.

3 Things to Improve Your Home Value

May 24, 2019 by Dan

Home renovations currently remain very popular amongst many homeowners.  A minor or major renovation can remain popular in both an up economy and a down economy.  There are many options and projects which a homeowner has to choose to from to increase the value of their home and spruce it up a little bit.  This short article will discuss 3 things that you can do to increase the value of your home.

1.      Kitchens and Bathrooms

Kitchens are the center of attention for most homes.  There are many styles, cabinet choices, backsplashes, faucets, appliances, and countertops to choose from.  Significant upgrades in both kitchens and bathrooms can increase the value of your home significantly.  If it is your house, you can get a little riskier in the design choice to ensure it is something that you truly love.  If it is a house that you will be selling, try to appeal to nicer upgrades that are timeless and will be favored by the majority of home shoppers.  Also, be mindful of the quality of the home and the appliances necessary.  If you are in a higher end neighborhood, you will need to pay attention to the higher end appliances to include Wolf and Sub Zero, Thermadore, Viking, and Miele to name a few.  I would highly recommend to get a designer well versed in specific kitchen and bathroom design.  These designers will have experience in software programs such as 2020 or ProKitchen. A specialty home supply store that carries cabinets, countertops, and flooring can be extremely helpful in pulling everything together for you.  Check out www.grandcanyonhomesupply.comfor a great home supply store example.

2.      Landscaping

Landscaping is what makes your curb appeal “pop”, and if it is done correctly can add some serious value to your home.  If you have a serious design eye, create a design through inspiration that you find on the internet or TV such as Houzz and HGTV.  If you aren’t too confident in your landscaping abilities or design eye, look for a landscape architect for a little help.  You can make a big impact with a little landscaping, or you can go all out.  The sky is the limit here depending on how much space you have to deal with.

3.      Modify the Floor Plan and Open the Area

The open floor plan seems to be a hot trend currently and over the past few years.  People love open spaces and light.  The more you can get your space to open up and bring light in the better.  This could include knocking a few walls down or adding a few windows.  Lighter colors can also brighten up an area.  Open floor plans provide a nice area to gather and entertain.  So, if you want to brighten up your space and make it a fun place to gather, focus on opening up your space.

What Are the Advantages to a Marble Countertop?

July 23, 2018 by Larry Strohmaier

marble countertop design

The kitchen countertop plays an essential role in the function of a home. It has to handle milk spills, the weight of Thanksgiving dinner, and the baking mess that accompanies fresh cookies. It is a center for family and space for everyone to come together and make memories. The countertop also serves as a design element in creating a cohesive and appealing look in your kitchen.

Countertops serve such a versatile and important function in your home that you’ll want to choose a material guaranteed to last the life of your kitchen, and then some. There are certainly many factors to consider when making a choice for countertops, but marble kitchen countertops in Phoenix are the way to go.

Looking the Part

In terms of appealing façades, marble countertops provide a timeless, elegant look. There is a variation of hues to choose from, ranging from solid white, black, rose, and green. Slabs are unique in appearance, ensuring your countertops will have one of a kind look at every turn. It is also a softer stone than most countertop choices, allowing for more creativity when choosing edge profiles. No matter what type of look you are going for, marble is versatile enough to accomplish what you need.

Take the Heat

Marble is a wonderfully heat resistant stone. While you might not want to make a habit of using the countertop as a cooling rack, it is nice to know you could. You won’t have to worry about the surface becoming marred if you leave something hot on the countertop. Marble kitchen countertops are naturally cool, making it a great choice in the Phoenix heat. The cool quality is also a good attribute for baking. You won’t have to worry about it catching fire, either!

Make it Last

The Taj Mahal, Parthenon, and Lincoln Memorial are all wonderful historical sites created from marble. This is an indication of just how durable this stone will be in your home. With the natural strength of marble, you’ll be hard pressed to find it cracking or scratching. Marble is also difficult to chip, ensuring it can handle everyday use as a countertop material. A combination of elegance and durability creates a kitchen countertop to pull together the most important room in the house.

Find It Easily

Other popular stone options can be a bit harder to come by, but marble is plentiful. While other substances might require a few days to deliver, marble is likely to be immediately available and able to be delivered the same day. Summary

3 Ideas for Better Lit Kitchen

June 13, 2018 by Larry Strohmaier

kitchen lighting fixtures

The kitchen — the single most seen and used room in the entire house.

Not only do we read recipes and cook in them, we hang out with friends and family, eat, read, even do office work all in our kitchens.

So why is it, then, that the one space that gets the most use and needs the best lighting (for safety as much as other reasons) often has the worse lighting in the entire house?

If this is your kitchen, don’t worry – implementing better kitchen lighting design does not require an entire remodel and an abundance of funds. Often, simply adding or changing out some kitchen lighting fixtures is enough to do the trick for a better lighting to cook, read, socialize, and mid-night-snack by.

If you’re ready for a better lit kitchen, here are 3 kitchen lighting ideas for you to try:

1.      Track Lighting

Kitchen Track Lighting

One of the biggest yet most common mistakes we make with our kitchen lighting is to have one, centrally placed overhead source of light.

The result is awkward shadows cast everywhere, including where you are trying to chop and read, and many areas of the kitchen and cabinets that are difficult to see in. It also means a bright glare from the source itself, and a nasty wake-up call when you’re just trying to grab a glass of water or midnight snack late at night.

One easy way to change this is by switching out the central fixture with track lighting, which has multiple fixtures and a variety of connectors and shapes so that you can focus light in specific areas, as well as spread it evenly throughout the kitchen.

You can simply use your central fixtures electrical box, select your bulb preference (they come in fluorescent, incandescent, and both high- and low-voltage halogen options), and choose and create the best configuration for your kitchen using L-, T-, and X-shaped connectors. You can angle the lights so that light will hit your work space, instead of coming from behind you, as well as the nooks and crannies of cabinets and pantries.

2.      Add Layers

kitchen lighting design

Even if you use track lighting, however, it is important to use more than just one layer of lighting. Overhead lighting is great and necessary for providing general light to the entire kitchen, but you need to add layers to help create more lighting options for both higher function and greater atmosphere.

One fantastic way to add another layer of lighting is to install under cabinet lighting, which is ideal for lighting up your work spaces. Your body will never again get in between the light you need and the chopping block or recipe you’re trying to read.

Another layer you can add to create a warmer, more welcoming atmosphere is ambient lighting. The glow of ambient lighting makes all feel cozy, and it also works to lessen the shadows and spread a soft, warm light throughout the whole kitchen. If you have cabinets that do not reach the ceiling, you can use that space to install some ambient light.

Ultimately, it’s about both getting creative and being practical, and this means a variety of light types placed throughout the kitchen.

3.      Have Dimming Options

The final kitchen lighting idea is to add dimmer switches and lights. This will allow you to adjust the lighting that you have to suit the activity and mood at hand.

If you’re in the middle of chopping those veggies, have those lights on bright. Enjoying after-dinner conversation? You can tone the lights down a little. Stumbling in from bed to sneak a snack or grab a drink? Just ease the switch up to give yourself enough light to see what you’re doing without blinding yourself.

How to Improve the Lighting In Your Kitchen

June 13, 2018 by Larry Strohmaier

Kitchen Pendant Lights

Your kitchen is the heart and soul of your home. It’s not just where meals are cooked – it’s where family comes together and memories are made. Good lighting is necessary to make this important space functional and enjoyable at the same time.

If you have an older home, your kitchen lighting might be lacking. Check out these kitchen lighting ideas to brighten things up!

Hang Pendant Lights Above Your Kitchen Island

Pendant lights are flexible kitchen light fixtures that come in a wide variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. More than a light source, the right pendant lights also make a stylish addition to your kitchen décor.

Hanging a group of two or three small pendant lights over your kitchen island enhances the room’s ambient lighting while providing practical task lighting for anyone eating or working below. They also go great over dining room tables and kitchen sinks.

When choosing pendant lights for your kitchen, you’ll want to consider how much light you need and what you want the main focal point of the room to be. For example, if you have a bold backsplash that you want to draw attention to, you wouldn’t want a flashy pendant light to distract from it.

Accent Your Cabinetry with LED Kitchen Lighting

LED Kitchen Lights

A lot happens on your kitchen counters. Chopping, dicing, slicing, reading, and writing all require a good source of light. LED kitchen lighting is easy to install inside and underneath your kitchen cabinets or anywhere else you need a little extra brightness.

LED light bars and ropes create a seamless row of light along the bottom of your cabinets, giving you plenty of light for food prep and jotting down grocery lists. If you have a white or very shiny backsplash, it’s best to install LEDs away from the wall and toward the front of the cabinets to reduce glare.

LED kitchen lighting doesn’t just make the space more functional – it’s also incredibly energy efficient. They last much longer than traditional bulbs, meaning you don’t have to worry about replacing them nearly as often.

Install a Dimmer Switch

You might need a lot of light to cook dinner in the evening, but when you sneak into the kitchen for a midnight snack, the last thing you want is to be blinded by your kitchen light fixtures when you flip the switch. Different situations call for different levels of brightness, which is why we should all be thankful for whoever invented the dimmer switch.

You might need some help from an electrician to install a dimmer switch in your kitchen, but the end result is worth it. From romantic dinners to late night pantry raids, you’ll be able to set the mood for any occasion.

Switch to Better Light bulbs

Sometimes, improving the lighting in your kitchen is as simple as switching to a different type of light bulb. Each type of bulb creates a unique mood. For example, fluorescent bulbs tend to give off a cooler tone than standard incandescent bulbs, which emit a warmer light.

Color-changing LED bulbs offer the most flexibility, allowing you to switch to cooler or warmer tones as needed. If you’re still using incandescent or halogen bulbs in your kitchen, you might want to consider upgrading to higher-quality LED kitchen lighting.

Consider Recessed Lighting

Kitchen Recessed Lighting

Recessed lighting has become a popular choice for kitchens, and it’s not hard to see why. Flush with the ceiling, these subtle kitchen light fixtures create an even distribution of ambient light. Because they don’t dangle from the ceiling, recessed lights are perfect for opening up small kitchens.

Before you install this lighting option in your kitchen, you’ll want to consider a few things. First, if you have high ceilings, you may want to consider a skylight or hanging pendant lights for your kitchen instead.

You’ll also want to carefully consider the placement of your recessed lighting. Avoid placing the lights too close together or too close to the center of the kitchen. To be on the safe side, the best thing to do is consult a designer.

Kitchen Lighting: A Step-by-Step Guide

May 28, 2018 by Larry Strohmaier

image2

Remodeling a home or building a new room from scratch can be an exciting process. There are plenty of small details that go into making up a room in a home, and each little decision you make in your home’s design can change the entire look and feel of the space.

Even if you’re just trying to shake up an already existing home design, changing these subtle features can make it feel like you’re living in a whole new house.

One of the easiest features to change that makes a big difference in a home is lighting. Specifically, kitchen lighting. With all of the gatherings that happen in a kitchen, from meals to parties to family meetings and everything in between, the kitchen is a central space that should be lit appropriately.

Check out this step-by-step guide to help make the right lighting choices for your kitchen.

Step One: Consider Existing Lighting

Before you commit to purchasing and installing kitchen light fixtures, consider the natural gifts that your kitchen may already have in terms of natural lighting. This is especially important when designing a home or kitchen from scratch.

A well-placed window can add a lot of natural light to the area, saving the need for extra lighting fixtures. If you’re able to add a window into the kitchen, think about when you and your family spend the most time in the room. Is it in the morning? An east-facing window will let in the rising sun. In the evening? A west-facing window will showcase the beautiful sunset.

Step Two: Shop Around

image1

Not all kitchen lighting fixtures are created equally. Depending on the type of space you’ve got, there are a few different choices you can make.

Kitchen pendant lighting is a great choice for those with very high ceilings because it helps balance out the space. Under-cabinet lighting is great for smaller or darker kitchens that need an extra boost of brightness. Chandeliers can give an elegant feel and help separate a dining area from a kitchen if you have an open floor plan.

Also considering the types of bulbs that work within these fixtures is important – are they incandescent, fluorescent, or LED? All of these bulbs give off unique colors of light and change how the room feels.

A good place to start looking is online; once you’ve narrowed down your options to the styles, colors and types of fixtures that you like, it’ll make your choice a lot easier.

Step Three: Visit a Showroom

The final step in the process is to visit a showroom. While shopping online can help you see all the styles available to you, a showroom can help you really envision how the light fixture will function in your home. If you’re not sure where to start, our showroom at Grand Canyon Home Supply has all kinds of ambient, task and accent lighting options for your home.

Come visit our showroom today to help make your decision on where you want to take your kitchen next.

The Subtle Art of Kitchen Cabinet Lighting

April 7, 2018 by Larry Strohmaier

Adding under cabinet lighting to your kitchen not only improves workspace when cooking, but it adds definition to your space. Because lighting is such an important aspect when it comes down to kitchens, light fixtures installed underneath your cabinets will add aesthetic complements that you’ll love.

This small feature goes a long way, however, there are still some elements you need to consider before diving in full force. You need to ask yourself what type of lighting you want and how this fixture will be of benefit to you and your home. Let’s get started!

Benefits of Cabinet Lighting

If you’re considering adding this type of lighting to your kitchen, consider these benefits to help you come to a decision:

  •        Additional Illumination – this is the main benefit as it will make your kitchen appear brighter. There are lighting options that allow you to dim the light and control how bright they shine. This is a great complement to the main overhead lighting.
  •        Eliminates Shadows – with cabinet lighting you don’t have to worry about shadows forming on your work area. This provides the perfect setting for your cooking and food preparation.
  •        Design – there are many different designs you can choose from which all bring a special ambiance along with them. You obtain a more contemporary feel and are ideal when remodeling or just wants to add a splash of style.

Additionally, under cabinet lighting adds practical lighting and enhances the aesthetics of the room. Homeowners have great options to choose from with the many lighting technologies currently on the market.

Types of Lighting

With the many types of kitchen cabinet lighting available, you want to consider voltage, wiring, dimming capability, fixture lenses, heat output, ease of installation, as well as how energy efficient they are. Below are the most common lighting options for you.

LED Lighting

This type of lighting is extremely energy efficient, dimmable, and offers a long lifespan. Because of its low heat output and easy installation, it is one of the more common types of lighting used in kitchen cabinets. One disadvantage of this type of lighting is the cost – it is significantly more expensive than other forms of cabinet lighting.

Fluorescent Lighting

Next in line in terms of popularity, you will find fluorescent lighting. They are also very energy efficient, have long life spans, and some types are dimmable – not all. They do contain mercury which can be hazardous if exposed to it which is a drawback.

Xenon Lighting

This type of lighting offers a good choice when wanting to enhance the area underneath your cabinets. Xenon lighting is more efficient than traditional incandescent lamps, offers high performing color rendering, and is dimmable. The only downfall is that it does burn hotter and is less energy efficient than LED or fluorescent lighting.

Halogen Lighting

The final type of lighting that will be covered is halogen lighting. This kind is ideal for illumination due to its bright lighting features. It’s also more efficient than traditional incandescent in terms of energy savings and heat output. One disadvantage is that halogen burns hotter than the rest of the types listed above, meaning that heat sensitive foods such as chocolate need to be kept away.It also has a shorter lifespan than any of the other cabinet lighting options.

At Grand Canyon Home Supply, we’re sure you’ll find the kind of lighting you’re searching for. We invite you to visit our showroom to obtain a clearer idea of which selection is right for you. Whichever type of lighting you decide to go with, we wish you the best of luck and an enjoyable renovation process! Happy shopping!

Explaining Kitchen Cabinet Pricing in Under 1000 Words

April 7, 2018 by Larry Strohmaier

When it comes down to home renovation projects, one of the more common spaces homeowners choose to upgrade is their kitchen. Not only do people benefit from this by increasing the value of their home, but they’re also enjoying a more functional and aesthetically pleasing living space. If you want to update an existing kitchen we recommend starting with kitchen cabinets, as they drastically change the mood and ambiance of any kitchen.

One of the main concerns when shopping for cabinets is the pricing. We want quality products that fit our budgets. For this reason, you want to have an idea of the type of cabinet you’re looking for and then look into cabinets that fit your price. Compare costs from different providers to ensure you’re receiving the best deal possible. Additionally, exploring common cabinet prices will make you an educated shopper, saving you time and money!

Types of Kitchen Cabinets

The first step to becoming an informed buyer when searching for Scottsdale kitchen cabinets is considering the right kind of cabinet for your kitchen. There are cabinets ideal for every style and budget. Among them are the following three types that you should familiarize yourself with:

  •         Stock Cabinets
  •         Semi-Custom Cabinets
  •         Custom Cabinets

Stock cabinets give your kitchen a fresh look. They are the most common and available in a large selection of colors, styles, and finishes.

Semi-custom is built to order and gives homeowners the freedom to choose a personalized look for their kitchen.

Finally, custom made cabinets are the most expensive kind and for a good reason. They offer a large selection of wood types, construction platforms, and finishing options. You customize them from top to bottom.

Pricing

As you can see, stock cabinets are the most affordable, while custom kitchen cabinet pricing is the most expensive. No matter your budget you can find a style you like in all three types. Kitchen cabinets make up a large percentage of your kitchen renovation budget – about 30% to 50%. This is important to keep in mind when working on cost estimations.

Additionally, lower prices usually include unassembled cabinets. If you purchase pre-assembled ones you need to consider the cost the company charges for assembling the cabinets as well as shipping charges. Prices depend on the following factors:

  •         Assembled vs Unassembled
  •         Shipping Costs vs Customer Pickup
  •         Style of cabinets

4 Things to Consider Before Buying a Quartz Countertop

March 15, 2018 by Larry Strohmaier

Few countertops are as popular and versatile as quartz countertops lately. Between their appearance and benefits over similar competing countertop materials such as quartz and marble, quartz has a lot to offer. If you’re looking to upgrade your dull laminate countertops, quartz countertop Scottsdale is a solid option worth looking into.

Here are 4 things to consider before you buy a quartz countertop:

1. The Look

If you’re looking for a specific aesthetic that you haven’t quite found in granite or other countertop options, consider quartz. This engineered stone can sport a variety of attractive looks in a larger range of colors than its competition. Similar to granite countertops, quartz has a very hard surface. However, unlike granite, quartz countertops are manufactured to be nonporous, which means it is more stain resistant. Finished quartz has a luxurious look with a very attractive depth that is hard to find in any other material. Since quartz is not straight from quarried stone, you can get much more consistent patterns in the design than you can find in natural stone.

2. The Price

The price of quartz largely depends on the brand you purchase as well as the quality of the stone. For decent quality quartz countertops, you could be looking at about $50-100 per square foot. For a higher end countertop, the cost might be around (or more than) $200 per square foot. Keep in mind, though, that these prices are competitive with other popular countertops like granite.

Overall, the major factors that determine the cost of quartz countertops are:

–          The thickness of the slab of rock

–          How much of the material is needed

–          How difficult the design needs to be

–          The quality of the quartz

3. The Durability

The benefit quartz has over concrete and granite is that it tends to be more durable and require less maintenance. Quartz is chip and scratch resistant thanks to its flexibly quality. While this material doesn’t crack as easily as granite might, it does not have the convenience of being heat resistant like quartz does; if you rely on transferring hot pots and pans directly from the stovetop to the countertop, you would have to make sure you protect the quartz from the heat.

4. The Maintenance Requirements

Thanks to its completely nonporous qualities, quartz is extremely stain resistant. Whether it is faced with a nasty wine spill or a breakfast mishap with juice and coffee everywhere, quartz resists harboring bacteria and stains. This material is very easy to keep clean and looking good as new. Thinking of Transitioning to Marble? Here’s What You Need to Know

February 23, 2018 by Larry Strohmaier

The marble look is classy and clean. The best part? It’s also timeless. Marble has the reputation of looking great, yet there’s more to this beautiful finish: it’s strong and it lasts a long time. If you’re thinking about transitioning to marble, here are four reasons why we agree with you:

Timelessness

Wood, laminate and other surfaces or flooring wear down over time. What’s even more frustrating, is that they require plenty of maintenance, such as cleaning, replacing or simply up-keeping so that they look clean. Because marble is a durable stone, once applied, its strong composition lasts a lifetime, not to mention that it never loses its classy look and it’s incredibly easy to clean.

Aesthetics

The decision to transition to marble usually comes because of the upgraded look marble gives any room. While this is very true, not all marble is created the same. There are different colors, yes; but there are different types of marble to consider for the different rooms in the home. Be sure to ask your sales representative the type of marble that is good for that kitchen countertop, or that bathroom renovation. If you’re using marble as a threshold, one type may also be better than another. While marble’s durability is unique and can adapt to any room in the home, we simply recommend asking your marble store in Phoenix which type of marble is best for your project.

Installation

Ideally when making a transition from one material to another, you want to ensure that the spacing will be correct. Not just in size of tile, but on the height of the flooring. The depth of the marble piece should ideally be flush or at least closely similar to the one you’re replacing. We recommend speaking with your marble store in Phoenix for more information on how to determine this important information.

Transition

Transitioning from anything else to marble is exciting and we definitely agree. However, doing it alone can be even more expensive than hiring a professional from your marble store in Phoenix. We highly recommend the transition and we just as strongly recommend you hire a professional for it. They will know the right cut, size and type for your needs. Not to mention, the benefit of just sitting back, relaxing and enjoying your new marble when the job is done.

Where to buy Laminate Flooring in Phoenix?

November 17, 2017 by Larry Strohmaier

Have you decided that laminate flooring is the option for you? If you have chosen laminate flooring in Phoenix as your next big home upgrade, then the next question you need to ask yourself is where you are going to buy it from.

When it comes to the flooring provider you choose to go with, this can be a very important decision. The company that you purchase your flooring from can have far-reaching effects on the quality of your floors. If they do not provide premium flooring materials to their clients, or to not do an excellent job installing this flooring, then you may be disappointed with the results.

So, when you find yourself looking for the right Phoenix flooring outlet for you, we’re here to help! These are the things you should consider when deciding where to buy laminate flooring in Phoenix.

#1 – Don’t Work with a Company that Makes You Choose Between Quality and Affordability

Yes, it’s the way of the world – some options are more affordable than others, and those of the best quality are going to cost more. However, a company shouldn’t make you choose between quality and affordability alone. If something is not of quality, the company shouldn’t be offering it at all!

At Grand Canyon Home Supply, we make sure that we don’t sell products unless we actually believe in their quality and reliability. Sure, some of our products last longer than others and will be of better quality, but we don’t sell anything unless we absolutely believe in its ability and performance. At Grand Canyon Home Supply, we believe that finding something of quality shouldn’t cost you more! It should be a given when you purchase your home’s new flooring.

#2 – Choose a Company to Help You from Start to Finish

In all likelihood, you’re probably not a flooring expert. If you’re anything like most people who find themselves on our website, then you probably have never completed a flooring installation project. If that’s the case, then you don’t want to work with a company that’s going to leave you high and dry after you purchase your flooring materials from them.

At Grand Canyon Home Supply, we have our experienced team of specialists available to help you with this home improvement project every step of the way. This means everything from conducting measurements of the size of your space, to assisting with the design, to delivering the materials to your home. At Grand Canyon Home supply, our main focus is on attention to detail and quality. That’s why we take into account to the wishes of our clients. This ensures that our products meet their needs! In addition, we always strive to make your budget a priority, so your new flooring installation does not leave you in a place of financial stress.

#3 – Find a Company with Experience

Whether or not this is your first rodeo when it comes to installing new floors into your home, that shouldn’t be the case for the company helping get you through the project! When deciding on the right company to help you find the right laminate flooring for your home, don’t settle for a company that doesn’t have experience. Experience shows that the company knows what they’re doing and that they’ve been in this situation before. If the company is established, it shows that enough people have used the company in the past and liked their services that they stayed in business! Experience is always a good sign. Lack of it might be a red flag you want to avoid.

At Grand Canyon Home Supply, our team of experts is highly knowledgeable and qualified to help you with every aspect of you home improvement projects, including when it comes to laminate flooring. If you have any questions, you can rest assured that we’re able to get them answered!

#4 – Look for Variety

The type of laminate flooring you install in your home will do a lot to dictate the look and style of the room. Don’t settle for a company that isn’t going to have what you’re looking for! Choose a company that offers the variety to give you what you are looking for!

At Grand Canyon Home Supply, we offer plenty of options when it comes to our laminate flooring selection. This makes it easy for you to choose an option that will complement the room it is going to be installed in!

The Verdict

We know what a big decision it is to choose the flooring company you are going to work with in Phoenix! That’s why we always strive to go the extra mile in everything we do to make the choice easy for you.

It can be refinished around 5 times, or even as many as 7 times! This flooring option can actually last you 100 years and is a good option to install in ancestral homes! Many flooring options – carpets, for example – end up serving as a lodging place for a lot of allergens. These can end up creating bigger problems for the people living or staying in the home or building. By trapping dust and similar particles in the area, those in the building can experience difficulty breathing. Weighing In The Pros and Cons of Granite Countertops

September 23, 2017 by Larry Strohmaier

So you are in the middle of planning your kitchen’s makeover. It probably didn’t take long for you to start getting overwhelmed by all the options.

Just the countertops alone create quite a challenging array of selections. Each material has its pros and cons, its unique character and function.

Perhaps you are considering granite for your countertops. It’s a classic choice with a strong and elegant look. But to really be sure if it’s the right material for you and your kitchen, be sure you know the pros and cons.

The Pros

There really are a lot of great reasons to choose granite countertops. The following are just a few of the pros:

  •         All natural: granite is a naturally occurring stone. This means it simply has to be quarried and cut – there are no potentially harmful chemicals or products contained within granite countertops, or dyes or stains for its color or finish, making it a safer material for consumers.

While granite does take thousands of years to form and is thus not the most “renewable” of resources, it is still quite green as there is no process to manufacturer it that makes it harmful to the ecosystem or to the owner.

  •         Many colors/styles to choose from: there are truly dozens to hundreds of colors and color-combinations. There are about 12 different color categories, but because of the nature of granite (to be discussed further in a moment), among these categories are nearly an infinite number of shades and options.

There is a color and style for every type of kitchen.

  •         More character: due to the process that forms it, granite is a conglomeration of minerals and rocks. This means that it is not just a solid color all the way through. A slab of granite is filled with grains, flecks and veins of other colors mixed in.

This gives granite a lot of character in a relatively small space. It is far from plain.

  •         Unique – no two countertops alike: as a result of the above, having a granite countertop also means no one else will have one like yours. Someone else may have granite, sure, and they may even have the same color.

But because every piece of granite is formed by nature over time in different locations, no two pieces look exactly alike.

  •         Heat resistant: granite is very practical, too. It is actually heat resistant, which means if you pull a hot pan out of the oven or off the burner, it is safe to set it down directly on the counter without damaging it.
  •         Scratch resistant: granite is incredibly hard and therefore cannot be scratched easily. This will help it keep its beauty for a very long time.
  •         Chemical resistant: granite is resistant to chemicals and not easily harmed by acids or chemicals that may be spilled on it. Obviously, you would still want to clean it up quickly, but it is unlikely to damage the countertop.
  •         Stain resistant: granite, especially dark granites, are dense and thus do not stain very easily. However, most of them are also treated with a sealer that can be applied every so often to help keep it stain resistant.
  •         Increase overall value of your home: no doubt, due to its beauty as well as its practicality and durability, adding granite countertops to your home is absolutely sure to increase the value of your home.

The Cons

While granite is a fantastic with all the above pros, there are still a few weaknesses to be aware of:

  •         Granite is porous: as may be imagined, granite is a fairly porous stone. While this isn’t a terrible thing, it can make it susceptible to staining if not sealed well. It can also mean that bacteria can hide in the porous stone and takes a bit more deliberation in cleaning to keep the counters perfectly sterile.

However, if you clean spills up immediately and are good about cleaning on a regular basis, this really isn’t a problem.

  •         Will require some maintenance: because it is porous and needs a seal to ensure that staining is not an issue, your granite counter-tops will need some maintenance.

Most come already treated with a seal that should last quite a few years – some up to ten years. But you will want to ask your provider to find out and learn when you will need to get a new seal coat applied. You can either call a professional, or you can do it yourself, which is actually just as easy as washing your counters down.

So, while it needs some maintenance, overall, it is a pretty low maintenance material.

  •         Potential for cracking or chipping: though extremely rare, it is possible to chip or crack granite if a very heavy object is dropped on it or hits it.

If you have heavy cast-iron pans, you may just want to be careful particularly around the edge of the sink, which is the most common area for chips.

Again, however, this is very rare, and most chips/cracks can be repaired by a professional.

  •         Can Be Expensive: granite can be pricey depending on the color and the source of the granite. It often ranges easily from $100-$250 per square foot.

However, low-end granite can be less expensive than high-end laminate, and granite can/should last a life-time. In the long-run, it is usually quite cost-effective.

3 Changes You Can Make to Your Bathroom Today

September 11, 2017 by Larry Strohmaier

Ah, the bathroom. The most, how shall we say, functional of all the rooms in the house. It’s usually the smallest and honestly, the least tended to with regards to giving it some style and TLC.

Yet, ironically, it is the one most frequented by everyone, including guests.

Maybe you’ve been noticing your bathroom looking a little drab and want to give it some pizazz. But a time and money required for a total overhaul of a bathroom, with all of the plumbing involved, is probably not in the budget or in your schedule right now.

Not to worry. There are lots of little things you can do to seemingly give your bathroom a facelift on a tight budget and limited time.

Here are 3 of our favorite ideas that you could implement right away.

Linens

Because bathroom spaces are typically rather small, even something as simple as the towels that you have hanging on rods or hooks can create an effect.

Rather than leaving your old, ratty or mismatched towels up, stop by the local store on your way home today and purchase a new set of towels. If you choose ones with a bold color or unique pattern, that can really create a whole new look for your bathroom.

You can take this a step further and even look for a nice fabric shower liner. Find one that matches or sets off your towels to really make it work.

You’ll be amazed at how once you have the towels and new curtain up it completely transforms the look and atmosphere of your bathroom.

Mirrors

Again, with the smaller wall space available in a bathroom, a simple change can go a long way.

So another easy little change with a big impact is changing out the mirror that is over your vanity. Trade out that bland rectangle of glass for something with a unique flair. You could go vintage, or create a wall of smaller mirrors.

However, you choose to go about it, by replacing the bland vanity mirror with something with character will bring a new and fresh look and quality to your bathroom.

Walls

If you are looking for a change that is a little more intense, yet still quick and relatively cheap to accomplish, you can always give the walls a completely new look.

Best of all, you have a couple different ways you can approach it.

Be bold and go with patterned wallpaper, perfect for smaller spaces. There are so many options, you are bound to find something that fits your style and will truly make your bathroom unique.

Another great option is choosing dark, bold pain to repaint your walls with. Sure, usually you think a small space needs light paint to make it feel bigger, but by using a bolder, darker pain, you can create a sense of coziness and allow the bathroom to envelop you.

Need Some Help?

Perhaps you are ready for a more serious overhaul of your bathroom. At Grand Canyon Home Supply, we can help you out. We offer flooring, lighting and bathroom vanities in Phoenix and Scottsdale, where we house our two show rooms, and we are happy to bring our expertise and services to you.

Where to buy bathroom vanities in Phoenix

September 11, 2017 by Larry Strohmaier

If you are planning a remodel of your bathroom, or maybe just looking to give it a fresh look, finding the right bathroom vanity can be the thing that does the trick.

There are a lot of options for bathroom vanities, now, and just as many options for types of suppliers. But since a bathroom vanity is such an important piece, playing a major role in the functionality of your bathroom as well as its aesthetic, you want to make sure you are looking for the best options from the best suppliers.

So, if you are hoping to find the best bathroom vanities Phoenix, AZ has to offer, keep reading! We will discuss all of the things you need to keep in mind to find the best vanity for your bathroom as well as what to keep in mind when trying to find a supplier as well.

Things to Consider About Vanity Types

Before you begin your search to seriously, you will want to familiarize yourself with the wide array of vanity types that are now available. With so many choices, you will of course want to explore them and find a style that fits your personality and taste.

  • Pedestal Sinks: Pedestal sinks are sleek and slender free-standing sinks. They can be used even in the tiniest of bathroom spaces and can come in all sorts of designs, meaning they can fit virtually any style.

While they are great space savers, they are very minimalist in function. They provide no counter-space and no storage space.

  • Free-Standing Vanities: Free-standing vanities provide a lot of the space saving nature and character of pedestal sinks, but with the plus of also providing some counter space and cabinets for storage.

These are the most popular vanity style currently, which is understandable since they still provide plenty of stylistic options, can fit in just about any size or shape bathroom, but still offer the function of a counter top and storage.

  • Vanities: Full-size vanities with cabinets are the next most popular bathroom style. They can have one or two sinks, and offer lots of counter space and storage.

These are perfect for family homes and can provide a very elegant and classy look. However, they are also much larger and frequently costly, so they don’t work in every bathroom or home.

  • Vessel Sink & Vanity: Increasing in popularity is the vessel sink and vanity where a “vessel” such as a bowl or square sink sits atop a vanity. These are very unique and provide a great look, but have very tricky plumbing and are therefore expensive and not too versatile.

Things to Consider About Your Needs

Now that you are familiar with some of the many options out there, you need to think carefully about your particular bathroom needs.

  • People Sharing the Sink: If you and a significant other share the bathroom and have morning routines that need to allow you to both be in the bathroom at the same time, you will probably need to consider a larger vanity with plenty of space.

If it’s for your half bath, then something like a pedestal or free-standing vanity may be best.

  • Life Style:If you are a makeup fiend, or have high maintenance facial hair, and will need to store plenty of tools, linens etc. you will want a vanity that gives you lots of storage.

If you have a fairly simple lifestyle and aren’t into spending lots of time prepping in the bathroom, you may prefer a smaller vanity option.

  • Space: The most practical and rigid qualifier, of course, is the actual space your bathroom has. If you are working with a tight or oddly shaped space, then you may need to stick with a pedestal sink or free-standing vanity out of necessity.

Things to Consider About Suppliers

Once you have a good idea for the styles you are interested in as well as your specific needs and limitations, it’s time to find a supplier.

You could go online or to some of the large home improvement store-chains. Many of these providers, however, will have only RTA (Ready To Assemble) or stock vanity options. These are going to be more generic, will not provide you any flexibility for customization, and are typically going to be cheaper in quality and appearance.

If you really want to find quality vanities that will allow you to bring some of your own creativity and style to the table, as well as provide true quality and longevity, you will want to aim for suppliers who specialize in semi-custom and custom vanities.

Fortunately, Phoenix has some great bathroom vanity suppliers to choose from, such as Grand Canyon Home Supply.

The List of Shades for Granite Countertops and Which One to Get for Your Kitchen?

September 9, 2017 by Larry Strohmaier

So you want to renovate your kitchen.

Whether you’ve just moved in and want to gut the kitchen to remove the previous owners’ strange taste, you’ve been living in your home a long time with a kitchen still stuck in the 70’s, or you are preparing to sell and want to increase the value, giving the kitchen a facelift is one of the most common household renovations.

Kitchen counters usually center in any kitchen remodeling plans, as just changing out the countertops can work wonders for the over-all look and functionality of a kitchen.

When you are trying to improve aesthetics as well as functionality and value, you can’t go wrong with granite countertops.

So Many Reasons to Granite

There are many reasons why granite is a common and excellent choice for kitchen counters:

  •         Granite comes in an astounding number of colors to fit any style and color scheme
  •         Granite has an elegant beauty that attracts the eye and ups the ante aesthetically
  •         It is very durable, not scratching or staining easily
  •         It is heat resistant, which means a hot pan won’t damage it
  •         Its beauty and durability combined mean adding serious value to your home

Why So Many Colors?

If granite is what you are considering for your new countertops, you have a lot to choose from. The variety of colors and combinations is astounding, and no two slabs, even of the same color, will be alike.

The uniqueness is because granite is actually a conglomeration of rocks and minerals, with quartz usually being the primary ingredient with numerous other minerals and elements composing it. Granite is composed of so many minerals and various rocks because it develops through a very slow cooling process within molten rock.

It is the minerals specifically that give granite the unique colors and color combinations.

The Many Shades of Granite

Now, technically, while commercially you can certainly find 50 or even more color varieties for granite, there are really only about 6 main color types of true granite. Their combinations will create many more shades and varieties.

But it is also important to note that some commercially advertised granite colors, like a pure white or pure black or a blue, are most likely not real granite (at least not 100%) but a similar type of stone.

That said, the shades of granite commonly available for your kitchen countertops include:

  •         White: from granite with a higher proportion of quartz, “white” granite is not solid white, but will have flecks of other colors (usually black) and is a milky-white.
  •         Off-White (greys): from granite with a higher proportion of feldspar, which creates an overall grey or off-white color.
  •         Black / Dark Brown: from granite predominately composed of biotite, this variety has a very dark brown to black appearance.
  •         Pink: from granite with a higher proportion of potassium feldspar, the result is a light salmon-pink color.
  •         Yellow / Metallic Gold: from granite with a higher proportion of muscovite, the result is a metallic gold or yellow color.
  •         Green: from granite with a higher proportion of amphibole, the result is a very dark green to black color.

Now, while these are the 6 main color categories, because granite will all have cooled differently and will have a unique variety of color blends depending on the minerals that were present when it cooled, out of these 6 main categories, 12 larger categories representing the color combinations that are possible are commonly used. Within those 12, you can have a nearly infinite number of unique colors and combinations.

The 12 common shades of granite you will likely see advertised are:

  •         Whites
  •         Greys
  •         Blacks
  •         Beiges
  •         Browns
  •         Golds
  •         Yellows
  •         Pinks
  •         Reds
  •         Greens
  •         Blues
  •         Purples

Remember, since all granite is a conglomeration of various rocks and minerals cooled slowly over time and at different rates, no true granite will ever be a solid, continuous color.

Real granite will always have grains and specks of other colors and minerals visible within it.

Picking Your Granite to Highlight Your Style

So how do you choose the right shade for you? Besides considering your own personal preferences, of course, you will also want to consider the style of kitchen you have (modern vs Victorian for example), the color fixtures, as well as the size of kitchen to help you determine what will look best.

  •         For the small kitchen: if you have a small, closed in kitchen, lighter or white granites can create an illusion of space, making your kitchen look bigger than it actually is.

Don’t worry about white granite being “boring.” Since even “white” granite will still have specks, flecks, and veins of other colors, it will still provide a vivid and unique character for your countertops.

  •         For the clean, sleek, modern kitchen: if you have, or are creating, a modern, sleek kitchen with metallic or black appliances, then black granite is perfect.

It is dark enough that it has a more uniform and simple appearance, while still offering character and a nice shine. Black also complements silver and white appliances and cabinetry exceedingly well.

  •         For the rustic kitchen: if you prefer the rustic or country look, with wooden cabinetry and rich earth tones, there is still a granite color for you!

The darker brown granites go amazingly well with wooden cabinetry and rustic earthenware and fixtures. The rich warmth and variety of shades in brown granites complement the wood nicely and help bring varying shades of brown and earth tones together.

  •         For the undefined kitchen: if you like a variety of styles in your kitchen, or like having the flexibility to change colors and styles up, beige or off-white granites are the way to go.

They aren’t much darker than white, but they tend to have greater variety of colors throughout, giving them a bit more flair, while still complementing many colors styles of cabinetry and fixtures

  •         For the artistic or quirky kitchen: for those with bolder tastes looking to make a statement or create a piece truly unique, the “jewel” color granites like the blues, reds or greens, are great. Just be aware that they don’t mix well with everything, so choose carefully!

4 Things to Look for When Buying Tile Flooring in Scottsdale

September 8, 2017 by Larry Strohmaier

Buying tile flooring in Scottsdale for your home is an exciting undertaking. Yet, there are a few things to consider before diving in. Starting with the area you’d like to tile, to the type of tile you need, and the budget you’ll spend, laying down tile can be a big project. To give you a hand, we’ve gathered four important tips for buying flooring in Scottsdale.

Tip #1

Determine which part of your house to tile. There are many choices of flooring tile, some of which we give below. Because there’s such a variety, we recommend knowing what area of your house you’re buying tile flooring for. Knowing whether it’s a high-traffic area is a big consideration for the tile you choose.

Tip #2

Type of tile. You’re looking for tile for a reason, one of which surely is the look and durability. Depending on the tile you choose, you can give your home a more classic or sophisticated look. There are many types of tile, which a professional can help you pick for the type of home and lifestyle you have. Here are a few types of tile that are popular today:

Porcelain Tile — This is a durable tile with a beautiful finish. Because of the strength of the material and its water-resistant qualities, it’s perfect for rooms of the house which tend to retain moisture, such as the bathroom and the kitchen.

Granite Tile — This is a resilient and strong tile, with multiple options for color. Granite is perfect for the areas of the home where activity is happening consistently.

Marble Tile— Marble is known for giving homes an upscale look because of its gorgeous finish. However, marble can stain and scratch easily. Marble is recommended for areas of the house where not much traffic occurs.

Tip #3

Know the size of the area. Once you’ve determined what room or rooms you’re buying tile for, measure the size of the area in feet. You’ll have to measure both, the width and the length of the room. One you have the width and the length, multiply both numbers by each other and you’ll get the square footage. This number is important because it will give you an idea of how much tile to buy. Keep this in mind: The size of the tile affects how much tile to purchase to fill the square footage of the area.

Tip #4

Purchase the right amount. Knowing the square footage of the area is key, but you may still not have the exact number of tiles needed. This is because tile is fragile and many manufacturers consider about 10% of broken tile normal. What we mean when we say to purchase the right amount, is to purchase a little more tile than you’ll need. We recommend calculating your budget so that you can buy about 10 to 20% more tile than calculated according to square footage. If you’ve laid down tile flooring before, then you may only need to buy 10% more. If this is one of your first times laying down tile flooring, we recommend purchasing 20% more tile. Make sure your tile shop has a refund policy, and ask about their tile warranty.
